4 Tips to Make Sure Your SR-22 Stays Active

Get a Car QuoteMany people make a mistake when they have to carry an SR-22 certificate. They file the SR-22 and do nothing else. They simply wait until the SR-22 certification expires.

States require SR-22 certificates for a variety of reasons. Carriers might have had multiple reckless driving charges or DUI arrests. The driver has to file the SR-22 certificate with the state DMV. The SR-22 verifies for the state that the driver has insurance coverage.

In a lot of cases, it is a generally acceptable thing to not worry about the SR-22’s status. SR-22 certificates are relatively low maintenance.

Still, drivers must realize they got an SR-22 requirement because the authorities deemed them risky.

SR-22s are certificates filed with the state DMV. They are not insurance policies. They verify that you have insurance. If a driver loses auto insurance for any period of time, that usually means that the penalty starts over. A driver could also face additional penalties for lapsed SR-22 coverage.

Keep these tips in mind when you have an SR-22 requirement. They could save you time and hassle in the future.

#1 Always keep insurance coverage

If your coverage lapses most states require auto insurance agencies to notify the DMV. The DMV will then likely initiate further penalties against you.

You will have to pay to re-start your car insurance, and the SR-22 period will likely start over. Make sure that you pay your auto insurance costs on time.

#2 Keep your driving information current

Make sure your insurance company and your DMV have all your driver information correct. If you move, update your address in both locations. Make sure that if you get a new driver’s license that you let your insurance company know.

If you get a new car, update your driver’s insurance policy immediately.

#3 Pay all your penalties

If you’ve gotten an SR-22 requirement, it is because the courts have declared you a risky driver. An SR-22 requirement comes after another traffic violation charge. These charges may come with penalties.

Make sure that you pay your penalties or sentences. That way, you have reciprocated your dues to the law and now need only wait for the SR-22 to expire.

#4 Don’t break the rules again

It is best not to break the rules again when you’ve had an SR-22. An SR-22 should serve as a warning to you so that you can improve your driving habits. But, don’t underestimate the power of the SR-22.

Avoid risky driving practices that place you at risk for at-fault incidents. Don’t speed or use your mobile devices.
