Getting an SR-22 with a Suspended License

CertificateA license suspension can mean various penalties for affected drivers. One of these penalties may be the requirement to get an SR-22 certificate. SR-22 certificates have an important impact on your auto insurance.

So, let’s take a look at how license suspensions may trigger SR-22 requirements.

What Causes Suspended Drivers Licenses?

A driver’s license suspension means a driver loses their qualifications to drive. During the suspension, drivers cannot operate their vehicles legally. If they do, they could face stiff penalties for operating with a suspended license.

Different charges may trigger a license suspension. However, license suspensions often accompany driving charges the authorities deem severe. These may include charges like DUI, reckless driving, accident charges. Drivers with multiple offenses often face a higher risk of receiving a license suspension because they may demonstrate a pattern of reckless behavior.

Why Could Suspensions Trigger SR-22 Penalties?

To reinstate your license, the authorities may require you to get a SR-22. SR-22 certificates are verification for your state DMV that you have active auto insurance.

License suspensions may represent that you are a high-risk driver. Therefore, the authorities may need you to prove that you have car insurance. Having coverage means you will pose a lower risk to others on the road when you resume operations. This is why the suspension may trigger the SR-22.

Getting Your SR-22 Certificate

SR-22s are not insurance policies. They simply verify for the driving authorities that you have insurance. When you receive a SR-22 penalty, you must contact your auto insurer. They can usually issue your SR-22 certificate for a nominal fee. The SR-22 may remain on your driving record for a couple of years. You must keep your auto insurance active for the entire penalty period.

Getting the SR-22 may mean problems for your insurance coverage. Some drivers may see their premium costs increase because of the extra risks represented by the certificate. Other drivers may have to switch to a new policy because their previous insurer may not cover them because of the SR-22.

Getting Your License Back

After the SR-22 takes effect, you can often begin the process of getting your license back. Most SR-22s take effect within a few business days.

Remember, you may have to meet other requirements to re-obtain your driving privileges. So, make sure you answer to all these penalties.
