How Can I Lower the Cost of My Motorcycle Insurance?

If you ride a motorcycle, you know the joys of the open road. But before you hit the road for your next destination, you want to ensure you have the protection you need—and possibly lower the cost of your motorcycle insurance.

Motorcycle insurance helps pay for accident damage, settlements and other obstacles. Having coverage can reduce your potential losses, whether your bike is on the road or parked on your driveway.

Standard motorcycle insurance can offer an array of benefits, including:

  • Collision coverage. This coverage may compensate you if your bike is damaged or lost due to a collision with another vehicle or object.
  • Comprehensive coverage. This coverage may compensate you if your bike is damaged or lost due to fire, theft, vandalism, hail or wind.
  • Guest passenger liability insurance. This coverage may provide protection for any passenger who is injured on your motorcycle.
  • Liability insurance. This coverage can include bodily injury and property damage you cause to other drivers if you’re at fault for an accident while operating your motorcycle.
  • Personal injury protection. This insurance may help with medical expenses for you and your riders in an accident, no matter who is at fault.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance. This coverage helps you if your insured motorcycle is involved in an accident with a driver not carrying insurance.
Lower Your Insurance Premium
Motorcycle insurance can be costly, especially if you’re on a budget. But there are ways to reduce your premium to make it more manageable. These are a few things you can do to make your motorcycle insurance more budget-friendly:

  • Take a motorcycle class. Taking special motorcycle training or safety courses can help make you a better and safer motorcyclist. Some insurance companies reward you for doing the extra work. If you’re shopping for new insurance, share your motorcycle certifications for possible discounts on your premium.
  • Join a riding club. Many riders choose to join a motorcycle riding club. Many clubs offer insurance discounts, including the American Motorcycle Association and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
  • Add motorcycle safety features to your bike. Certain safety features can reduce your motorcycle insurance costs. Anti-theft technology such as a good alarm system, a smart lock or an intelligent tracking system reduces the risk of your bike getting stolen and can lower your policy fees.
  • Review your insurance coverage. It’s essential to review your insurance coverage periodically to ensure it has what you need. For example, if you don’t ride year-round, you may want to explore short-term insurance. Your insurance company can review the benefits and drawbacks of this type of coverage with you.
  • Increase your deductible. You can lower your insurance expense with a higher deductible, which is the amount you pay before your insurer pays on your claim. The higher your deductible, the less your insurer pays on your claim, and the lower your annual premium becomes.

Motorcycle insurance protects your financial security and your riding future. It’s critical to take time to review your insurance options, and just because the price may be low, it may not be the best value. Find a reasonable premium with the benefits you need.
