It’s a pretty well-known fact that apartments, generally speaking, aren’t as secure as houses, but that doesn’t mean that your apartment has to be unsafe. In fact, there are several steps you can take to optimize your apartment’s security in order to make it a less attractive target to potential thieves. How?
First, always lock up. Most thieves enter homes through unlocked doors or windows, so be sure every entry is locked before leaving and going to sleep. And since apartment doors are often weaker than those on houses, it’s a good idea to ask management to install a deadbolt on exterior doors for more protection against break ins. Similarly, you can add security to sliding glass doors by placing a thick wooden rod into the track to prevent the door from being pried open.
Second, choose your location wisely. You should select an apartment complex located in a safe neighborhood with a low crime rate. Keep in mind that living on a higher level often reduces your risk of theft because it’s harder for thieves to break in and carry items downstairs without being noticed by another resident. They look for quick, easy units.
Third, keep them guessing. Some thieves may try to study your behavior to learn your schedule before breaking in. So it’s important to keep your schedule as sporadic as possible. Even with rigid work hours, you can make it seem like you’re home by setting lights and a radio on timers so they turn on and off at random intervals throughout the day. You can also visit home over your lunch break if you work nearby.
And last, use your resources wisely. Does your apartment complex have a courtesy officer? Ask him or her to keep an eye on your unit if you plan to be away for longer than a day. That way, you can be alerted if there are any signs of trouble.
