On TV, auto insurance claims are all car-jackings, rush-hour pile-ups, impromptu baseball sized hail storms or cows being thrown at your truck by a tornado. In reality, there are five different incidents that make up the majority of auto claims and many of them are triggered by common, everyday events. 1. Windshield Cracks: As you’re driving down the highway, pebbles and debris can come hurling toward your car windshield. Rocks hitting windshields, even small rocks, at 50 miles an hour and cracking or shattering them is quite common. While there is no real way to avoid this as you drive, you can at least make sure your driveway is clear so your lawnmower won’t be throwing rocks at your windshield when you cut the grass this weekend.
2. Parking lot damage: Chances are, a wayward shopping cart at agrocery store will be the culprit behind your next auto claim. It’s notjust errant carts causing a ruckus though; people who park too closeand leave you with a door ding are also to blame. Park far away fromother cars and cart corrals will help you prevent claims of parking lotdamage.
3. Theft: Whether you have a sports car, pick-up truck or an old sedan there’s every possibility that it might be stolen by professional thieves or kids looking for a joyride. To help avoid the likelihood that you will have to file an auto theft claim, be sure to always lock your doors, park under streetlights when possible, and invest in an anti-theft device like a car alarm or steering wheel clamp.
4. Vandalism: Vandals can come in all shapes and sizes. From kids keying your car on a dare to adults enjoying the creation of mayhem, the chance that your car will get vandalized at some point is high. Car alarms that trigger when someone gets too close can help; but, parking your car in a garage is the ultimate protection.
5. Rear-End Collisions: No matter how careful you are, if the person behind you is not paying attention or following too closely you could be hit from behind. While this is one of the most common types of auto claim incidents, it can be easily avoided when drivers maintain a safe distance from the cars in front of them, make sure their brake lights are working, and pay attention to the road.
